In the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, we promote an environment of inclusion, respect, and affirmation. We value individuality, along with trust and openness. Our inclusive environment makes it possible for us to be committed to the work we engage in at UNCP.  Therefore, we are proud Braves, championing for diversity and inclusion. And we achieve this through our efforts in Unity, Nourishment, Community, and Pride. Support from private donations helps enhance the overall learning experience for our students by increasing the number of opportunities and resources we are able to provide. Donations from private donors are used to support several initiatives and resources.

Programs supported by donated gifts to ODI:

  • Brave Dialogues
    • Brave Dialogues is a great opportunity to create a safe space for differing opinions to be heard and shared. We strive to promote an environment of inclusion that encourages open dialogue with students, staff, faculty, and the community about topics not genuinely discussed. We support open and respectful of varying thoughts, opinions, feelings, etc.
  • BEAD
    • Brave Educator Advocating for Diversity (B.E.A.D.), is a program of dedicated students who are committed to educating their fellow peers and faculty/staff on a variety of diversity and social justice issues. B.E.A.D.s accomplish this through class presentations (freshman seminar) and workshops. The mission of these student educators is to create awareness while helping to foster a future that encourages individual growth and expanding others desire to embrace diversity within the campus and surrounding community.
  • Safe Zone
    • Safe Zone E&A (Education & Advocacy) educates faculty, staff, and students about issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and questioning individuals (LGBTQIQ) and their loved ones. The full workshop sessions are typically done in two parts and will provide participants with a functional knowledge of terminology, the gender and sexuality paradigms, conflict de-escalation techniques, and ways to support the LGBTQ+ community as an active ally and advocate. Safe Zone is not only for allies! Many members of the LGBTQ+ student, faculty, and staff community here at UNCP have participated in the Safe Zone E&A workshops and become certified members of our growing Safe Zone E&A community.
  • Diversity and Leadership Summit
    • The annual Diversity and Leadership Summit is held in partnership with the Office for Student Involvement and Leadership. The Diversity and Leadership Summit provides an exciting opportunity for students, staff, and faculty from institutions across the Southeast to network and explore important issues in diversity and student leadership.
  • Social Justice Symposium
    • The Social Justice Symposium is an annual campus dialogue addressing a current and relevant issue of social justice. Keynote and panelists travel from across the country in order to provide needed perspective, inspiration and training to students as they encounter these issues throughout their lives. The Social Justice Symposium is held in the fall of each academic year.
