Group Counseling

Men’s Group

(Meets from 12:30-1:30pm on Thursdays in UC 221)

This group will focus on working to first identify issues particular to male college students and then work to increase understanding on how social pressures act on males to shape and conform them into certain constricted roles. Group members will increase their knowledge of issue particular to males, gain awareness on how social pressure dictates actions and beliefs, and learn techniques to counter social and interpersonal pressures.

Express Yourself and Grow Group

(Meets from 3:30-5pm on Thursdays in UC 221)

“The act of creating art is therapeutic in and of itself, helping communicate deep feelings, making sense of experiences, as well as imbuing a sense of accomplishment.  In the art making process, pent up emotional tensions are released in a safe and healthy way that doesn’t result in offending or injuring others.”    Express Yourself & Grow will promote self- expression, hope and inspiration, and coping strategies. Group leaders will use CBT theory and integrate this practice into the art expression being created.   Clients will process their artwork with their individual counselor or they can schedule an appointment with group leaders.

Therapeutic Yoga

(Meets from 4-5:30pm on Mondays in the Cypress Multipurpose Room)

Heartsease is a therapeutic yoga group designed to help you take a break from life, get out of your mind, and get into your body. Yoga is a holistic mind, body, spirit practice gaining increasing support for its capacity to help maintain emotional and overall wellness. Heartsease will use hatha yoga with sequences that support a balance of effort and surrender. Poses are gentle and can be modified for more or less rigor. At the conclusion of each group we will have a short discussion about our yoga practice and our personal reactions to the practice of the day.

Process Group

(Meets from 1-2pm on Wednesdays in UC 221)

A process group is a group in which students meet in an effort to increase emotional awareness and relationship understanding between self and others.  Individuals who participate in a process group want to find out more about who they are and how they relate to others.  Process groups create learning, insight, and an increased potential to live life with a greater sense of awareness and connection with others.  Group members will identify how others perceive them, will challenge and grow their personal communication style, and increase their knowledge of emotional awareness of self and others.

Group therapy offers the opportunity to address issues, concerns, and problems in an interpersonal setting with peers and a therapist leader. Group therapy provides a safe place to work on relationships, intimacy, and self-esteem. It can be an invaluable therapy resource.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

  • Group can afford the opportunity to “be real” with others in an environment of safety and respect.
  • Group can counteract feelings of isolation and a sense of being alone with one’s feelings.
  • Members are able to try out new behaviors.
  • Group can provide members with diverse views, responses, and feedback.
  • In group, members often see their “usual” patterns of relating to people, allowing for an opportunity to challenge these patterns.
  • Group can allow members the chance to explore and better understand themselves.
  • In group, members can learn new social techniques, ways of relating, and how to better cope with difficulties.
